Early in his teenage years, Mike Baur was always passionate about banking and finance. He was born and brought up in Fribourg, Switzerland and attended University of Rochester New York where he graduated with an MBA. Mike also went ahead and got an Executive MBA from the University of Berne.
Mike Baur’s Career
Mike spent about twenty years in Swiss private banking after working his way up to be an executive board member from a commercial apprentice at UBS. In 2014, after quitting his banking career, Mike founded the Swiss Startup Factory with his two partners Max Meister and Oliver Walzer. The Swiss Startup Factory is among the top independent and privately-funded early phase ICT Startup Accelerators in Switzerland. Mike Baur is a great mentor and financial supporter of many Swiss startups and also spends most of his time in the Swiss youth entrepreneurship.
For instance, he participated in the START Summiteer contest that aimed to build an entrepreneur network for the Swiss Startup Factory. Back in 2016, he was named the deputy managing director for CTI Invest after it joined hands with Swiss Startup Factory. Because of his passion for the banking system, he was inclined to propel the Swiss startup ecosystem to a global level and worked to make it stand out in the extremely competitive market.
What Lead to His Success
From the top positions in the finance system, Mike was able to see many business opportunities in the banking system from a helpful perspective. Baur became recognized by the Chief Executive Officer of Clariden Leu, who gave him an opportunity to manage the firm’s operations in Zurich. This helped nurture Mike’s talent as an entrepreneur since he had the responsibility of finding solutions to all the challenges that the company faced.
Baur was frustrated by his colleagues who did not have the courage to seize opportunities when they presented themselves as a result of market turmoil during the financial crisis. Although he did not change his position, he was able to see problems at established businesses that had managers who did not adopt well to take decisive action. He saw the banking system as a complacent industry, which made him develop a strong urge to come up with a proactive firm that is ready to adapt to changes.
