When Jeremy Goldstein hosted a fine dining event on Nomad Hotel’s roof deck on 22 May 2018, visitors were treated to sumptuous foods and some of the best wines in the winery industry. However, the event was more than just a group of friends and corporate executives catching up while having a great time.

It was a fundraiser for a noble cause that is dear to Jeremy Goldstein’s heart: supporting the recovery of individuals with mental illness. Organized in collaboration with Omar Khan and Jim Finkel, all the proceeds of the high-table event were to be donated to Fountain House: a nongovernmental organization dedicated to supporting mentally ill patients. Hope Fountain, founded by six individuals who met by chance at a hospital in 1944, has taken a leading role in helping the country deal with a problem that is estimated to affect over 450 million people globally. For over seven decades, the company has implemented a revolutionary operational model that has been copied in 32 U.S. states and over 30 countries globally.

The primary objective of the model is to help mentally ill individuals recover from their conditions. This objective is achieved through a multi-pronged approach grounded on communal support. Fountain House also offers accommodation while it also has a young adults program aimed at equipping their young members with life skills that are critical in overcoming life challenges.

Its health and wellness program ensures that its members benefit from more than just healthy meals; they also benefit from healthy living and fitness education offered through partnerships with well-recognized health and fitness organizations.

Many of its members have become successful professionals in various fields while its housing program helps over 500 people annually to find houses. Up to 99 percent of its members have access to housing compared to 40 percent mentally ill individuals in New York who are nonmembers of the organization.

Re-hospitalization among the organizations stands at 10 percent compared to 50 percent for nonmembers nationally. Fountain House’s members’ school completion rate stands at a remarkable 77 percent compared to the national estimate of 32 percent. The organization boasts of an employment rate of 42 percent.
